Laminate Flooring Maintenance Tips

Chicago, IL Laminate FlooringYou hear all about how easy laminate floors are to take care of, but what type of maintenance do they really need? What should you do to clean them and what should you not do? To help you keep your laminate floors in good shape, our pros at Chicago Hardwood Floors want to give you a few tips on cleaning and maintaining your laminate flooring.

Keep in mind that when you get advice and tips online, it’s always best to make sure you don’t void the product warranty before you dive right in. Be sure to check your warranty for the laminate flooring cleaning and maintenance methods they recommend before you get started.

Mopping Laminate Floors

Using any type of soap on your laminate floors will only make them look duller. Hot water does a good job and is recommended for damp cleaning.

Notice we said damp mop your laminate floors, not wet mop! A wet mop can cause separation at the seams of sheet laminate or at all the seams of laminate floor tiles. However, lightly spraying a cleaning product that is specifically made for laminate floors may be okay – check the warranty first.

  • Don’t use regular liquid cleaning products, hot water works best.
  • No wet mopping, only use a damp mop on laminate floors with seams or tiles.
  • Only lightly spray cleaning products which are specifically made for laminate floors.

Remove Spilled Liquid Right Away

Leaving a spilled liquid on a laminate floor is going to cause problems. While it may dry on its own just fine, the liquid could discolor the floor or seep into the seams and cause them to come apart after time.

Dust Mop The Floors Regularly

Laminate floors are pretty durable but they will scratch if you don’t remove the dirt and debris from the surfaces regularly. Be sure you start a routine of dust mopping your floors either daily or every few days to avoid scratching. Once the surface is scratched, a laminate floor has to be replaced because it can’t be refinished or resealed like a hardwood floor can.

Vacuum Your Laminate Floors Once A Week

Follow up with vacuuming once a week to give your laminate floors a more thorough clean. Be sure that your vacuum cleaner is in good shape and won’t cause any surface scratching!

Cleaning and maintaining laminate floors is easy; what’s hard is getting into a regular routine. Just keep in mind that your floors were an investment that you want to protect, and get help if you don’t have time or can’t do it yourself for any reason!
